BIRD WATCHING
The Rio Grande Valley plays host to an incredible variety of birds; almost 500 species have been documented in this unique environment.
You will find them nesting along the quiet lagunas, palm-fringed resacas and lush thorn forests of the area. Literally millions use the flyway on their seasonal passage.
The Valley's bounty of birds has sparked the interest of photographers as well. The Valley Land Fund Photo Contest, a biennial pairing of landowners and shutterbugs has become one of the most prestigious and lucrative contests in the country.
Other opportunities are also available. The two National Wildlife Refuges provide a variety of tours during the bulk of the year, as does Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park. Check with their staffs for details and scheduling. Other good sources of information are the local Chambers of Commerce. Harlingen, for example, can provide you with a Valley-wide checklist. Or stop by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership for a copy of its comprehensive Rio Grande Valley Butterfly and Birding map.
