They include the establishment of the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen, an upper-level medical school; the construction of a pediatric specialty clinic in Brownsville by Driscoll Children's Hospital, and the groundbreaking of a new medical center in Harlingen.

Mobile health care services in the Valley are provided by Valley Air Care, an emergency helicopter service. Since its establishment in 1995, more than 2,000 critical patients have been flown to medical centers.
